I was surfing through comedians on YouTube when I came across a man doing a routine about disgruntled employees. He said, “So if you’re happy in your work you must be a gruntled employee, right?” I thought that was kind of funny until I looked up the word gruntled. It’s in the dictionary, and it means happy, pleased, satisfied, or contented. As an aspiring writer, that got me to thinking… Words are alive and in a constant state of transition. Why had the word disgruntled endured, but its antonym disappeared? Writing is fun, but you’ve got to get it right to remain credible with your audience. Words count. The Internet is the great equalizer. Unless you tell your readers, they don’t know if you’re male or female, young or old, rich or poor, married or single… They can’t hear the inflections in your voice or see your facial expressions as you speak. All they’ve got are your words… Choose them carefully!
